2009 Civitan Charity Golf Classic Tournament a Success

Glen Abbey hosted the 2nd Annual Civitan Club of Oakville Charity Golf Classic tournament.Held the last weekend before this premiere course closed to host the 100th RBC Canadian Open tournament, the setting was electrifying with viewing stands installed. Civitan guests could play in pro course conditions, including tackling the very challenging long grass off the fairways.

Golfers received a registration package that included a Glen Abbey hat, RBC Canadian Open commemorative towel and a fine leather kangaroo golf glove custom fitted for each player by Oakville’s House of Kangaroo. Beer and vodka martini refreshments were provided on two oasis holes by Cameron’s Brewery and Slava Vodka, both headquartered in Oakville. Players vying for a hole-in-one on the fourth hole had a chance to win a $13,000 Rolex watch provided by Knar Jewellery and staffed by its founder Jeff Buzbuzian.

There were 141 guests attending the shot gun game and dinner, including spouses who joined golfers for refreshments and a fine dinner. Master of Ceremonies Philip Wilson captained the evening’s program and Vivian Demian from the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital spoke about the special needs of the hospital’s Child & Adolescent In Patient Unit which treats children and teens who suffer from mental illness. The Civitan Club of Oakville, with support from Steelcase Canada/POI Office Interiors, donated 10 student desks and chairs to the Unit as patients need to continue their schooling while in the hospital for an average two-week stay.

Despite challenging economic times, and thanks to our guests and generous sponsors, the Tournament raised $15,000, a 20% increase from last year. All the funds are donated by the club to local charities, especially those such as Community Living Oakville which assist people with developmental disabilities.

Players have been surveyed about their Civitan Tournament experience to help the Club plan the 2010 event.
